A group of faculty members from the Department of History at the College of Arts, University of Baghdad, organized a scientific symposium entitled “International Geodiversity Day and Its Significance in Historical Studies.” The lecture was delivered by Professor Dr. Aqeel Abbas Ahmed Al-Zubaidi, a geologist, member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and expert in world heritage. The event was held as part of the International Geodiversity Day activities organized by UNESCO under the theme “One Earth, Many Stories.”
The symposium addressed the importance of geodiversity in understanding the history of the Earth and its impact on human and environmental development. It also emphasized its role in supporting the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in confronting the challenges of climate change.
The session further highlighted the need to raise public awareness about the value of geological heritage, which suffers from neglect and threats due to human activities.
It is worth noting that UNESCO encourages academic institutions to organize scientific and field activities on this occasion—such as lectures, symposiums, and visits to geological sites—to document them within the global geological heritage map.
This activity contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 17, which promotes partnerships for the realization of the goals.
